So What's The Big Deal?

-500 billion to 1 trillion plastic bags are used every year, worldwide.
-About 1 million plastic bags are used every minute.
-Plastic bags remain toxic even after they break down.
-The average time it takes for a plastic bag to photodegrade is 1000 years.
-Plastic bags are the second-most common type of ocean refuse, after cigarette butts.
-Every square mile of ocean has about 46,000 pieces of plastic floating in it.
-In 2008, 3,960,000 tons of plastic bags were produced, 90% of which were discarded.
-The solution is not switching to paper bags or compostable plastic bags because they require higher consumption of raw materials and more energy during the manufacturing process.

Well What Can I Do?

1) Take the pledge to BYOB! (Check out the ‘Pledge!’ tab).
2) BYOB! Check out some of the ultra-compact bags available, they are small enough  to take everywhere so you never forget!
3) Refuse a bag. If you don’t need  one, don’t take one. Even if your bags are at home, transport your groceries to
the car using your shopping cart and fill up the bags when you get home.
4)  Get in the habit! Keep reusable bags in your purse and/or vehicle.
5) Reuse  the bags you have accumulated as garbage liners. Why not crochet a reusable  grocery bag out of the old ones? You can even iron old plastic bags together to  make a reusable shopping bag.
6) Open your eyes to how many bags you actually consume: try keeping count, or count the bags you have stored for safe keeping
and see how many thousands of years it will take for them to degrade.
7) Cut down on plastic produce bags, do your veggies really need to be kept separate? If so, BYOB for produce.
8) Spread the word! Make a statement! Being eco-friendly is COOL!
9) Shop at BYOB-supported businesses! (Check out the ‘Place to Shop’ tab).
10) Join BYOB (check out the 'Join Us' tab).
